Update Regarding COVID Surveillance Testing

Tuesday, November 17, 2020

Dear Liverpool CSD Families:

I wanted to take a moment to provide you with an update regarding the first day of COVID-19 surveillance testing at seven Liverpool Central School District elementary schools.

Yesterday, representatives from the Onondaga County Health Department visited seven of our elementary schools. In all, 568 students and staff members were tested, and 566 of those tests were negative.

I’d like to thank everyone for their patience and understanding as we prepared for our first testing opportunity. It was a very fluid situation throughout the weekend, and we’ve learned a great deal about how this process works and what will allow us to make the appointment process smoother in the future. Seven additional buildings will participate in testing later this week or early next week, so please keep an eye on your e-mails for more information.

Another positive note… over the weekend New York State made changes to the testing requirements for schools that are in the state’s yellow zone. School districts are now required to test 20 percent of in-person students, faculty, and staff over a two-week period immediately following the announcement of a yellow zone designation. This is a change from the original one-week testing period.

In addition, if results indicate that the positivity rate among those tested is lower than the yellow zone's current seven-day positivity rate (the percent of positive cases of all COVID-19 tests performed), then testing at that school will no longer be required. If the results of the testing are higher than the yellow zone's current seven-day positivity rate, the school will be required to continue to test 20 percent of the in-person population on a bi-weekly basis.

As you can see, based on yesterday’s numbers we are off to a great start.

Thank you again for your patience and understanding throughout this entire process.

Dr. Mark F. Potter
Superintendent of Schools
